Multimedia studios
The newly-refurbished Multimedia Studios (Studios 2 and 3) are situated in the University Language Centre's open learning facilities on the lower ground floor of Samuel Alexander Building (building 67 on the Campus Map).
The Multimedia Studios are versatile language learning spaces equipped with
- DVD players
- TV/VCRs linked to satellite feeds
- PCs for DVD playback, use of multilingual software, videoconferencing, etc
- access to TV over IP (for viewing live satellite channels via the University network)
- booths with LCD screens for group viewing of DVDs etc
- flexible work spaces for individual or pair/group work
You might wish to check the TV Channels, then download activity sheets or worksheets from the Learning Guide pages on the website, followed by watching the relevant programme live via TV or PC.
You might wish to watch a video or DVD from the ULC library and then check further details about the film, its director or star(s) on the internet. As all the media you need to do this will be available, you won't need to change room between activities.
There is a printer serving both rooms in Studio 2.
DVDs and audio CDs may also be played on the PCs in Studios 2 and 3.
These facilities were designed - and recently updated - to encourage language learning. You should not feel uncomfortable about speaking aloud, using the microphones on PCs etc.
If you are looking for a quiet study space, please use the Library or the Study Area adjacent to the Library and Reception. (Please note that Library resources should not be removed from the ULC unless on overnight/weekly loan - for more details see the Library page). Audio CDs, CD-ROMs, DVDs and videos for playback in these studios are available from the ULC Library.
The headsets provided with PCs are equipped with microphones, facilitating recording onto voice boards etc. Many CD-ROMs in stock in the Library also have facilities for recording and playback, particularly to compare pronunciation with supplied models. Learners are encouraged to repeat aloud (even without recording) or to record themselves digitally or onto their own cassettes using ULC facilities.
Headsets with microphones are also available for loan or purchase from ULC Reception.
The Conversation Room, which is adjacent to the ULC Library, is available for small group work, Face-to-Face meetings, voice recordings etc. Students can book this room by adding their name to the timetable on the door. Students wishing to record dialogues can borrow digital recorders (for use in the Conversation Room only) from Reception, use software available on the Conversation Room PC, etc.
External to the University Language Centre, Rooms N1.4 and N1.16 (Samuel Alexander Building) are Personalised Learning Rooms which are available for general student use. These rooms contain interactive 'Smart' White Board equipment (allowing for digitized capture of images/text displayed on the board), and a dedicated PC and plasma screens, and have WiFi access for students who wish to use their own laptops. If you wish to book/use either of these rooms please contact the School of Languages Linguistics & Cultures Reception (also in Samuel Alexander Building) on 0161-275 8311 (ext) 58311 (int).
The PCs in the ULC are reserved for members engaged in language learning activities. Members are requested to respect the needs of other members and find alternative PCs (eg. in the Leamington Room Cluster nearby) for use of e-mail, word processing etc.
